Slice #2 Hard Act To Follow

How do we respond to compliments?

What happens when people, strangers even, enter our lives with kind words and loads of encouragement?

I ask because that’s what just happened. In response to my first slice I received more kindness than I could return in a short span.

It’s humbling and at least in my case there’s a tendency to want to wave it off, to downplay the occasion. Instead of giving in to habit, however, I want to take a different tack.

First, I want to say, Thank You! Thank you for finding my words and acknowledging them so kindly. Thank you for showing up and building community. Thank you for seeing and hearing me where that might not be the norm in other contexts.

Next I want to encourage all of us to get comfortable with accepting kind words from friends and strangers alike. Reminding ourselves that we are worthy works better in community.

  1. It can be so hard to accept kind words and compliments! I still struggle with it, but I am getting better, remembering to simply say “thank you,” instead of flinging out a slew of self-deprecations to deflect from the kindness. Whew! That’s been hard to learn. Thanks for calling this out. I always need a reminder! 🙂

  2. There is so much wisdom in these words: “I want to encourage all of us to get comfortable with accepting kind words from friends and strangers alike.” It can be hard for us to find this acceptance; yet, kind words are life-giving when we let them soak in!
