A Sweet Slice of Life #3

Twizzlers matter.

As a US passport holder living as a permanent resident of the EU, I currently cannot run out to the corner store and pick up a package of Twizzlers. I can get Snickers, Twix, Kit-Kat, Oreos (!), but no Starbursts, Sweet Tarts or Life Savers. Upon landing in the the US I used to purchase a small and ridiculously expensive package of Twizzlers to welcome myself back into the country. Nowadays I can usually wait until I can get to a drug store and pick up other favorites. That’s maturity kicking in.

Before I leaving the US I used to stock up on brown sugar cinnamon poptarts (unfrosted, if possible) and maybe just a single package of Life cereal. It is not that I need any of these things. They are simply reminders of an earlier time. They are easily forgotten on a day-to-day basis.

In the grand scheme of things, I can and could live without Twizzlers and Sweet Tarts. I’m sure I could.

  1. I went to college in Belgium and also had my favorite sweets from home that I yearned for (and would pay the occasional ridiculous price for at an American goods import store)–even though Belgium is heaven for a chocolate lover. I love that moment of maturity where you can wait til you get to a drugstore to buy the Twizzlers.

  2. Ah, the life of an expat. I currently have a bag of Cadbury Mini Eggs I have squirreled away from last year. Now that they will be able to be replaced soon, as we are going to NYC for Spring Break, I am about ready to pull them out and enjoy each and every one – myself! It’s the little things in life, right?

  3. My daughter went to Germany for 6 months, and asked for Trader Joe’s snacks in her care packages. Food (even candy!) is so braided into our emotions… and who doesn’t love Twizzlers (they are one of my favorite road trip treats!)?

  4. I can totally relate to this slice, transporting me back to my years abroad decades ago. Lucky Charms was my comfort sweet of choice in Beijing. Funny thing is that I haven’t had a bowl since then. Thanks for sharing.

  5. I love Twizzlers and Sweet Tarts too! We can live without them I am sure, but it just makes them so much more delicious to savor them in small bits.
